Arsenal defender Ben White has been ruled out of contention for the World Cup after sustaining medial ligament damage.
The Premier League leaders confirmed the injury on Tuesday, stating that the England international will miss the remainder of the season.
“Our medical team are now managing Ben’s recovery and rehabilitation program,” Arsenal said in a statement. The club added that the goal is for White to be fully fit for the start of their preseason preparations.
As a result, White will also miss the upcoming UEFA Champions League final against PSG.
White sustained the injury during the first half of Sunday’s 1-0 win over West Ham.
He had returned to the national team in March after a nearly four-year absence, following his decision to leave the squad midway through the last World Cup. He featured in friendly matches against Uruguay and Japan and was in contention to be named in coach Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
White is among several high-profile players to suffer injuries ahead of this year’s tournament, set to take place in June and July.
