Ben Aitchison delivered his best first-class bowling performance since July 2022, propelling Derbyshire to a dominant position in their County Championship Division Two clash against Northamptonshire at the Central Co-op County Ground. The seamer, who missed the entire 2024 season due to a back injury, claimed 4-55 as the visitors were dismissed for 228. Rory Haydon contributed three wickets, while England spinner Shoaib Bashir took two.
Calvin Harrison fought valiantly with a defiant 107, sharing a 105-run seventh-wicket partnership off 230 balls with Lewis McManus. However, Northamptonshire were forced to follow on and ended day three at 66-2, still trailing by 310 runs. Bashir bowled Ricardo Vasconcelos shortly before stumps.
Zak Chappell, who bowled impressively without reward on day two, finally broke through in the morning session, ending a stubborn fifth-wicket stand. James Sales, dropped off Chappell the previous evening, had resisted for 35 overs but was undone by a ball that kept low and came back. Derbyshire struck again in the next over when George Bartlett clipped Bashir to mid-wicket, leaving Northants at 116-6.
Harrison drove Bashir over long-on for six, but otherwise adopted a cautious approach as McManus joined him for another resilient partnership. The pair frustrated Derbyshire for 22 overs, reaching lunch at 173-6. Resistance continued into the afternoon until the second new ball provided the breakthrough. Harrison cover-drove Haydon for consecutive fours on his way to a century, but Haydon had the last word, shaping one in to knock out middle stump.
Aitchison quickly dismissed Ben Sanderson and George Scrimshaw, while Harry Conway survived nearly eight overs before McManus was caught well by Matt Montgomery at short leg. The follow-on was enforced with Northants 376 behind. Vasconcelos and Luke Proctor initially gave hope, seeing off the new ball. Vasconcelos was dropped on 23 at first slip off Martin Andersson, but Andersson then had Proctor lbw pushing forward. Bashir dropped a difficult low chance at backward square leg to give Vasconcelos another life on 28, but made amends by bowling him, as the opener chopped on while attempting a cut three overs before the close.
