Luis de la Fuente has opened up about the potential returns of Dani Carvajal and Gavi to the Spanish national team, just months ahead of the World Cup.
The Spain manager, 64, recently presented his autobiography ‘La vida se entrena cada día’ and took the opportunity to address the status of several players who could still make the squad for the tournament in Qatar.
Speaking about Real Madrid right-back Carvajal, 34, who is currently injured and has struggled for game time after recovering from a serious setback, De la Fuente said: “He is a captain in every sense of the word. I spoke with him and it’s nothing serious. But he needs time to show his level. We’ll see if he can prove it and get the chance. Just as I brought him into the squad before, he will understand if I have to make the opposite decision. I hope he recovers and regains his form, because we would all be happy.”
More optimism surrounds Barcelona midfielder Gavi, 21, who has long been a favorite of the coach when available. “He is in a very good moment and competing fantastically well. That’s the best news for everyone,” De la Fuente added.
With only three or four players carrying fitness concerns, De la Fuente has essentially decided on the 26-man squad that will defend Spain’s honor at the World Cup.
